Tom Newell is a freelance musician based in London. Specialising in classical, traditional and many other styles on violin, mandolin and banjo, he performs regularly in concerts, at festivals, on television and for private events; both in the UK and internationally. Contemporary folk trio Effra, British Dance Band Alex Mendham and his Orchestra, and the raucous Ceilidh Liberation Front are some of the more active projects Tom is involved in.
Tom is an experienced instrumental teacher and has a number of private students, teaches in schools, is a tutor with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, co-directs youth folk ensembles at the Centre for Young Musicians and runs a course in folk fiddle at Morley College in Lambeth.
Writing about music is another of Tom's pursuits and his album reviews and other articles can be found in Songlines Magazine. He holds a master's in ethnomusicology from SOAS, University of London where he conducted research into the dynamics of virtuosity and gender in music, amongst other things.
